You can access your "T" drive from home in two ways:

  1. Go directly through your browser (Internet Explorer)

  • Open your browser. Clear out the current address in your address bar by highlighting it and then hitting delete.

  • Type in the following address: ftp://ftp.staff.pld.fayette.k12.ky.us

  • A logon screen similar to the following should appear:

  • In the User Name text box, type in the domain name (fayette) + \ + your user name. See example above.

  • In the password box, type in the password you use to logon at school.

  • Click on LogOn. Your "T" should appear.

  • Select the document or folder with which you want to work. (Note: you do not want to work on a document while you are in your "T" drive.) You want to copy the file or folder to your computer at home.

  • Right click on the file or folder you have chosen and drag it to your desktop. Click copy on the pop up window.

  • Close your "T" drive window. Work on your file.

  • To put your file back on your "T" drive, simply access your "T" drive, and drag your file back into the your "T" drive.

Note: If you have sent a file from home to your "T" drive and a file with that name already exists, you will be asked if you want to replace the old file with this new one. Be careful. If the two files are the same document, go ahead and say “yes.” You are merely updating the document. If, however, you have mistakenly named this new file the same as one already on your "T" drive, and the file on the "T" drive is a different document, you will lose the original "T" drive document if you say “yes.” If this is the case, minimize the "T" drive window, rename the file you want to send, open your "T" window and drag the file to your "T" drive. You should see your newly named file.

  1. WS_FTP is a program that will allow you to upload or download files from a server.  When you download something from the Internet, you are using an "FTP" client to transfer the files you want from the host computer to your computer.  Similarly, when you are at home, you can download documents from your t-drive at school to your computer at home.

To Get The Software:

Go to http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm and download WS_FTP LE.
Note: This is no longer free  for educators.

To Set Up The Software:

When you first open the program, a Session Properties window similar to the one here, will appear.

In order to ftp to your t-drive, you need to set up a profile.

1.      Click on New.

2.      In the Profile Name text box, type in a name for your profile. In the sample below, the profile is called PLD.

3.      In the Host Name/Address, type in ftp.staff.pld.fayette.k12.ky.us.

4.      Host Type should be left at the default setting of Automatic detect.

5.      For User ID, type in fayette\username.

6.      Your password will be the same as the one you use to log onto the network. You can click the Save Pwd box if you like. Your General Tab should look similar to the following:

    7.      After you enter your password, click OK. This will take you to your
T-drive. (You may be prompted to put in your password again-that’s okay)

Notice that this screen has two windows. The one on the left, Local System, is your computer at home. In the sample above, you are seeing the files that are in a folder

called WS_FTP on my home computer. The one on the right, Remote System, is your T-Drive at school. You should see all your files that you have saved on your T-drive.

Accessing Your Files on the T-Drive:

First you need to decide where on your computer you want to put the files that you take from your T-Drive.  Looking at the left hand window (Local System—computer at home),

Double click on the green arrow  two times or until you see C: under the words “Local System.” Scroll down the file window until you see Documents and Settings, and click on it. Finally, scroll again until you see Desktop, and click on this. You should now see everything that is on your computer’s desktop in the file window. You want the Path window under Local System to be showing: C:\Documents and Settings\username\desktop. My would look like:

Once you send your document to the desktop, you can then easily move it anywhere you want.

1.      Look at the right side of the ftp window. Single click on the file you want to send to your desktop.

2.      Click the arrow that is pointing to the Local window . You have just sent a copy of your selected file to the desktop on your computer. (You will hear a sound once it has been transferred.) If you have no more files you want to transfer, close the program.

To Send A File From Home To School

1.      Open WS_FTP and locate the file (Local system—left window) you want to send to your T-drive at school. Click  to get to your file.

2.      Highlight the file you want to send and click the arrow pointing to the Remote window . A copy of your file should now be in your T-drive at school.

Note:
If you have sent a file from home to your T-drive and a file with that name already exists, you will be asked if you want to replace the old file with this new one. Be careful. If the two files are the same document, go ahead and say “yes.” You are merely updating the document. If, however, you have mistakenly named this new file the same as one already on your T-drive, and the file on the T-drive is a different document, you will lose the original T-drive document if you say “yes.” If this is the case, minimize the FTP program, rename the file you want to send, open the FTP program and click the refresh button in the Local Window. You should see your newly named file.
