Kentucky's
Animals

The
Red- Tailed Hawk can live up
to 10-15 years. It can weigh 1.5-3.3 pounds.
Barred Owls eat rodents,
reptiles and fish. The barred owl’s common
name is the hoot owl.
The Cardinal is our
state bird. It stays
in Kentucky all year round.
The Kentucky Bass is a popular catch in Kentucky. It is our state fish.
The Copperhead, Timber Rattlesnake and
the Cottonmouth
are the only venomous snakes in Kentucky. Their heads are the shape of a
triangle.
Black Bears not only
shed their fur, they also
shed their paw pads. The Black Bear
hibernates above and below ground.
Elk
are members of the deer family. They have been over- hunted in Kentucky, but, luckily we
have brought them back.
The
Gray Squirrel is our state wild animal. They can swim up to 2 miles in
calm water.
The Peregrine
Falcon can fly-when vertical- up
to 200 mph! The female has a wingspan of 45
inches and weighs 2 pounds more than
the male!
The
Gray Bat is an endangered animal. It normally lives
1 mile away from a river
and has a wingspan of 11-12 inches.
ANCIENT
ANIMALS
Mammoths came to
Big Bone Lick for
salt. Big Bone Lick is now one of our state
parks.
Megatherium
came to Kentucky in the Pleistocene Epoch. The dinosaur can grow up to 20 feet
long.
