Debbie
Sogin is the director of the chorus at Morton Middle
School in Lexington, Kentucky. Ms. Sogin is in her 25th year of
teaching. Before teaching at Morton, Ms. Sogin taught in the Austin, Texas
Independent Schools. Ms. Sogin has taught elementary, gifted and talented
elementary magnet students and middle school students.
A Texas girl from the age of 1, Ms. Sogin began piano lessons at age 5, then played French horn from junior high through college. She had the privilege of working with the outstanding band director, Richard Crain, and studied piano with Pricilla Heard at Temple College, Ken Frerichs at Texas A&M Commerce, Tony Camara at the University of Illinois, Tim Woolsey at Texas State University and vocal coach and opera conductor Robert Wallace. As a graduate student, Ms. Sogin taught private piano students, class piano, music theory classes, and coached opera and vocal students. Ms. Sogin holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas A&M at Commerce and a Masters of Music degree from Texas A&M at Commerce. Ms. Sogin has earned a Rank I certificate from the University of Kentucky and has done additional graduate work at the University of Illinois and the University of Texas at Austin.
Ms. Sogin is a past president of the Kentucky Music Educators Association District 7-11, a KMEA State General Music 6-12 Chair, and KMEA Kentucky Children's Choir Chair. At Morton, she has been Music Department chair and a member of the SBDM Council. She holds memberships in ISME, KMEA, MENC, AOSA, KOSA, Mu Phi Epsilon, and Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa. She was named Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Central Kentucky Music Educators in District 7-11 in 1996. Ms. Sogin also collaborates with the School for the Creative and Performing Arts and their musical productions.
Ms. Sogin is on the Kentucky Department of Education Arts and Humanities Content Committee and is the Middle School Arts and Humanities Content Leader for the Fayette County Public Schools. She is a member of the Lexington Singers and is on the staff for the Lexington Singers Children's Choir.
Ms. Sogin is married to Dr. David Sogin, a Professor at the University of Kentucky, and has two wonderful children - Celia - a university dance education major, and Ari - a junior SCAPA/Lafayette art major. She loves to travel, read, and garden...and encourages all to recycle, reduce, and reuse.
With the help of family, friends, and the Morton community, Ms. Sogin is a breast cancer survivor. She raised over 1800.00 for the Komen fund last year with the help of friends, family, and students, faculty, and parents from the Morton Family.
