What happened here???

Well, I apologize for taking so long to get back in the swing of things!  I have finally gotten back on track.  Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement while I was recovering from my surgery.  I am feeling SO much better now!  I didn’t even know I was feeling so badly.

Things have been a little wild this week.  I’m hoping it’s the weather!  You know, in the past five years I’ve been teaching, I have noticed that March is a little nuts.  Must be the wind.  J  I have started some new things in the classroom to help solve this problem.  Kids can earn tickets for good behavior throughout the day.  Then, at the end of the day, I have a drawing for various things.  Also, each table competes for the most “beads” every day.  The table that gets the most beads for good behavior visits the treasure chest at the end of the day.  In addition to this, the whole class earns “points” each day for good behavior.  If they get enough points, they will get a whole-class reward on Fridays.  (Today they got to sit anywhere they wanted!)  I’m hoping that by instituting these new practices, we can have a fun, positive, and happy classroom!

Field Trip

We will be going to see “The BFG” at the Lexington Children’s Theatre on Thursday, March 13th.  The performance will be at 11:45 in the morning, so we do not need to pack a bagged lunch.  The field trip costs $7.00.  I really need to have the money and signed permission slip by next Wednesday!

Also, F-Complex teachers will be planning our “big” field trip in May.  We need ideas for some fun places to go!  In the past, we have gone to the Kentucky Horse Park, Fort Harrod, and Fort Boonesboro.  Do you or your child have any good ideas?  I would like to keep them in the Lexington vicinity due to high cost.  Please give me any good ideas you might have.

Conferences

It’s that time of year again!  I will be having conferences at the end of this month, right before Spring Break.  I thought I would try to have as many as possible that week, and then if there were any of you who I could not see, we would meet the week after Spring Break.

Right now, the week before Spring Break is very full for me, what with my class at Georgetown and the Drama class I am teaching here at school.  I will be having conferences from March 24 through March 28.  Unfortunately, I cannot have any conferences that Wednesday or Thursday.  On Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, however, I can meet from 3:00 until 6:00.  Please contact me with a good time for you.  First come, first serve!  J

Important News for Parents and Guardians

** Again, I am running low on Treasure Chest goodies.  If you have any small old toys, pencils, stickers, candy, etc., PLEASE send them my way!

** The Art Enrichment Program Showcase will be at 6:00 p.m. on March 27th.  Arts Day will follow on March 28th all day here at school.

** Spring Break will be March 31st through April 4th.  Whoo-hoo!!

**  We love to see parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and guardians at lunch time!  Please feel free to come and eat with your child at 10:45.  Lunch is $3.25 for adults.   Please take note that it is school policy that no outside food from restaurants (like McDonald’s) is allowed at Dixie.

What We’ve Learned This Week

Math – This week we have been learning all about fractions.  We have been comparing them using fraction cards.

Language Arts – We are continuing to work on our “How-To” pieces.  In reading, we have continued to work on theme and plot.  We also demonstrated our knowledge of purpose and descriptive details.

Social Studies – We continued our Mexico and Canada unit.  This week, we learned about Mexican families in Mexico and in the United States.  The children also learned about the landscape of Canada.
