First Grade Flyer

February 2008

Fantastic February News:

Dixie has started "Fun Fridays!"  As you know, each Friday will have a different theme (i.e. - pajama day, hat day, jersey day, etc.)  Please ask your child about the theme for each week.  This Friday is "Inside-Out Day."  The students will have so much fun wearing their clothing inside out!!!

We have been focusing on summarizing this week in reading.  We are teaching the children how to pick out the most important parts of the story.  The students have also been working on their visualizing skills in reading.  We are teaching the students how to picture a story in their mind as they read.

We have started classifying objects in science and will soon be learning about the states of matter.  The students will be learning about solids, liquids, and gases.  We will also be reading lots of books about famous African-Americans, dental health, and our early presidents this month.

In writing, the students are getting lots of practice writing in their journals.  The students have been writing stories, letters, and lists.  We have also been revising our pieces.

We have completed Unit 5 in math and are currently working on skills in Unit 6.  Please continue to practice counting coins (dimes, nickels, and pennies) and telling time to the quarter-hour with your child at home.

February Dates To Remember…

Feb. 14th - Classroom Valentine exchange

Feb. 15th - School WILL be in session

Feb. 18th - NO SCHOOL (President's Day)

        PHONICS DANCE

Decoding is an important skill for reading.  Students can look for "hunks and chunks" to help them decode words.

We added -kn, -wr, -oo, -ew, -ui, -oi, -oy and -ed to our Phonics Dance.

   Supplies Needed...

We are already completely out of glue sticks.  If possible, please send in more glue sticks.  We really appreciate it!!!

Are you ready for school?

Please make sure your child comes to school prepared by bringing his/her backpack, Take Home Folder and homework every day.

Thank you!!!

CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH

We are focusing on kindness this month.

The students will be learning ways to be kind to others!!!

- All reading homework packets are due back to school on Fridays.

- Your child's reading log IS considered part of their nightly homework.  Since every child gets to take home a different book to read every night, please remember to record each book on your child's reading log for points.

- All math homework is due the following day it was assigned.
